Getting to Know Us: Gabriela De Jesus, Digital & Community Organizer

1. Tell us about your role at your organization? Your role at FVH?

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way people organize on a daily basis. Now more than ever, we rely on digital platforms and social media to learn about the latest developments in our communities. As a Digital & Community Organizer, my job is to keep our community informed about the latest news and information regarding health care in Florida. I develop creative content to keep our community engaged while amplifying the voices of the many Floridians still struggling to afford health care.

2. How do you feel your own personal values align with the mission, vision, and values of FVH?

My own personal experience made me aware of the importance of having access to health care. As a small business owner, I struggled to afford health care. Many times tough financial decisions have to be made and certain expenses cut in order to grow a business. In my case, health care was too expensive to afford. Two years into the business, I suffered an injury that left me unable to stand on my feet and unable to work, which caused me losing my home and my business.

3. In your opinion, what do you think is the biggest challenge in healthcare today?

I believe the biggest challenges in health care in the US are misinformation and lack of access to medical attention. A lot of people are unhappy with the current health care system in America, but are skeptical about changes to increase access to affordable care. Many believe they will have to pay for others to receive medical care, failing to realize that a healthier community improves their own health.

4. Can you name a person who has had a tremendous impact on you?

My maternal grandfather was a role model and inspiration for me. His hard work, integrity, and dedication to his family and community sparked my desire to follow his footsteps. From him I learned resilience and courage.

5. What do you enjoy in your favorite breakfast that you make at home?

I enjoy having pancakes with guava marmalade and cream cheese frosting for breakfast.

6. What is one piece of advice for someone wanting to pursue a career in Public Health / non-profit sector?

It’s never too late to get involved in your community. Your voice, experiences, and story are powerful tools for change.
