If Republicans insist on pushing for Trumpcare 2.0, they may find that doing so comes at a considerable political cost, as two groups that support the Affordable Care Act are targeting those congressmen who are trying to repeal it.
A progressive and pro-labor group called Save My Care has spent more than $1 million on ads that target seven Republican members of the House of Representatives, according to a report by The Washington Post. These include Reps. Mike Coffman of Colorado, Carlos Curbelo of Florida, Darrell Issa of California, Tom MacArthur of New Jersey, Brian Mast of Florida, Martha McSally of Arizona, and David Valadao of California.
One ad, which targets Rep. Issa, points out that Trumpcare would have cost 24 million people their insurance within 10 years and created a massive age tax.
Similarly,American Bridge, a Democratic superPAC, has created an ad called “TrumpCare 2.0: Another Disaster,” according to a report by Axios. The ad will target Reps. Lou Barletta of Pennsylvania, Barbara Comstock of Virginia, Will Hurd of Texas, Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania, Tom Marino of Pennsylvania, Luke Messer of Indiana, Todd Rokita of Indiana and Ann Wagner of Missouri.
“Why are Republicans fighting for it?” the spot asks. “Because people who earn over $1 million a year would get tax cuts totaling $144 billion. Tell your member of Congress. Don’t tell Donald Trump sell you out.”
According to a McClatchy-Marist Poll taken from March 22-27, 18 percent of Americans support Obamacare as it is and 46 percent would only change it so that it can do more. Only 7 percent want to change it so it does less and only 26 percent want to repeal it altogether.
